Grenada is an island belonging to the Antilles approximately 200 km northeast of Venezuela.

Cacao production was introduced to the island by the British in the eighteenth century and not long after, it became the hub of their cacao production.
Despite the extreme weather conditions and the passing of time, cacao is still grown on the island. Nowadays there are around 8,500 cacao farmers on the island who cultivate 2,500 hectares of land.

Farms are on average 1 hectare and cacao is intercropped with nutmeg, cinnamon, bananas, citrus, soursop and breadfruit.

CUBA-BARACOA-BEAN-DRYING.jpeg

Cacao was introduced at the beginning of the 19th century by French colonists who fled from the revolution of independence in Haiti. They started growing coffee and cacao on the island. The breeds introduced are thought to have originated from the Atlantic coast of Mesoamerica.
This cacao comes from the area of Baracoa in the Guantánamo province in the Northeast of Cuba. Baracoa lies on the Bay of Honey (Bahía de Miel)
and is surrounded by a wide mountain range (including the Sierra del Purial) which causes it to be quite isolated.

Ecuador, Hacienda Victoria

ecuador-hacienda-victoria-drying-the-cocoa-provider

Hacienda Victoria is a single-estate farm of nearly 500 hectares located in Cerecita, near the coast of
Ecuador. Tucked away between the gentle and lush hills of the Guayas where the savannas roll and
remnants of tropical dry forest covers species of native kapok trees. The region has the perfect
climate conditions for cacao trees to flourish.
Hacienda Victoria was founded in 2009 by Carlos Eduardo García Fuentes who, business-minded as he
is, purchased a plot and organised a team of the country’s finest specialists to construct a new type of
farm with exclusively Arriba Nacional cacao. This native variety is under much pressure nowadays due
to the growth of CCN-51 cacao in the country. Hacienda Victoria does not plant the CCN-51 variety.
Many farms mix the Arriba and CCN-51 varieties together that creates inconsistency in flavours and
quality, but at Hacienda Victoria we guarantee 100% Arriba Nacional beans. It is our mission to break
with what others are doing and recover the ancient tradition of cultivating the Arriba cacao.
The fine flavour trees that are in Hacienda Victoria have the potential to produce more than 2 tons
per hectare (More than 40 Quintals) attracting the interest from all the country and building what
people are calling the renaissance of Arriba fine flavour cocoa in Ecuador.

São Tomé, or Chocolate Island, once was the world’s biggest cocoa producer and an important source of cocoa in later years,
claims a key role in the introduction of cocoa in West Africa from Latin America and facilitated the early growth of consumption in European mainland.

The country has a complicated history, being a former slavery driven economy. This resulted in a heyday in cocoa production 100 years ago.

Cacao was introduced to the tropical West African island of São Tomé around 1850 by Portuguese colonists after having successfully introduced Brazilian varieties to the neighbouring island of Príncipe about thirty years earlier.
Given its unique location and rich history of cocoa, Daarnhouwer has held a strong connection with the island for many years, sourcing cocoa beans directly from farms and through small local buyers.

This cocoa is produced by CECAQ 11, a second level cooperative that brings together 11 cocoa producing communities in the south of São Tomé.

At present, CECAQ accounts for 1135 members, of which 402 are women. São Tomé farmers plan to build on the successes that their co-operative model has bought.

For example, using money raised from her work with the co-op, 49-year-old cocoa farmer Hortência Pina has been able to improve her crops:

‘My trees are getting old and I am able to replace them with new ones which we have grafted to create better hybrids that are more productive and start fruiting after only two years,’ she says.
In recent years, members of CECAQ-11 have also put their Fair Trade premium toward other community-improvement initiatives, such as building a kindergarten.

Belize Punta Gorda Organic cacao

When Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés travelled through the area currently known as Toledo,
his accounts reveal this area was already long renowned for its cacao production and commerce.
In South Belize, 90% of its cacao farmers are subsistence farmers who were granted land by the government but who cannot afford to cultivate their land nor have reliable, consistent channels to market or sell their beans.

Since 2016, Peini Plantation produces its own cacao on 96 acres of land and buys cacao from these farmers through its sister company Belize Cacao Trade.

Together with Na’Lu’Um Cacao Institute, an association of local Maya cacao farmers, they have supplied thousands of free saplings to these farmers and support them with training and micro finance. Thanks to this initiative, around 204 cacao producing families now have a steady,
reliable source for the farmers to sell their beans at a fair price, and to help them grow their farming operations, so that they can provide a better life for their families.
